The Chachapoyas civilization once ruled the area hence, giving the city its name. The nearby archeological metropolis known as Kuelap is the largest known in Peru and has over 400 stone buildings. A 12 hour bus ride from Chiclayo is required to arrive to Chachapoyas.

Day 1: Chachapoyas Panoramic Bus Ride

Chachapoyas Bus: First class bus ride (full-day) from Chiclayo through the Andes Mountains arriving at the city of Chachapoyas. You are free to enjoy the evening independently.

Day 2: Chachapoyas Tour

Chachapoyas Tour: Day begins with an extensive excursion through the forest to discover the pre-Inca site of Karajia, which still has its large wooden coffins in superb condition. Afterwards we will visit the Choctamal village to observe the birds native to the Amazon border and distant views of the ancient fortress of Kuelap.

Day 3: Kuelap Tour ("Machu Picchu of the North")

Kuelap Tour: Visit to Kuelap, the most important and largest construction in South America. The fortress walls are over 60 m high (200 ft.) with 400 stone buildings. Kuelap is the "Machu Picchu of the North" being much larger and older than its counterpart. Built around 800 CE and at an elevation of 3,000 m (10,000 feet). The climate and vegetation give the feeling of a timeless autumn. Many orchids and bromeliads cover the stone buildings that are decorated with elaborate stone designs.
